I have found that the PVC pipe is a real tight fit in the fittings. So much that they do not go all the way together. And even worse, won't come back apart without a fight. Any ideas on how to solve this propblem?

A) Sand, grind or shave down the ends of the PVC that go into the unions being very careful to not overdue it or then they will be too loose.
B) Coat the ends and inners of the pipes & unions with a clear lubricant.
These are 2 options.

You could try to decrease the diameter of the pipe with sandpaper. But if you remove too much material, the fittings won't stay connected. Another option would be to cut slits parallel to the pipe in the area that enters the fitting. This would reduce the surface area of the pipe that actually comes in contact with the fitting. Disassembly might not be such a struggle then.
